Clean, PET free water – a story of eMan reducing plastic waste

Nowadays, you see plastic waste everywhere... It’s about time to reduce its usage as much as possible. That is why we are supporting a project called FILTERMAC, which aims to reduce the usage of plastic bottles. Thanks to our initiative, university students did not have to use over 132,000 half-liter PET bottles.

When FILTERMAC approached us about a year ago with an offer to sponsor their drinking water dispenser, we said “yes” without hesitation. Since then, Charles University’s 17. listopadu dormitory has a FILTERMAC that eliminates the use of tens of thousands of plastic bottles each month. During the first eight months of operation, this has saved 2,450 kg of plastic. As students have access to filtered water for free, they don’t have to buy bottled water anymore. They only have to decide between sparkling and still.

How does FILTERMAC work?

Good ideas are usually simple. We pay an operation fee to the FILTERMAC provider and, by doing so, we also get advertising space on the LCD display installed on the front side of FILTERMAC. The provider supplies the technology, water filters, and is responsible for maintenance. This cooperation has been working like clockwork since May 1, 2018.

We regularly receive reports from the provider, and the numbers make us happy every time. The dispenser we support is used the most, by around 800 students every day. And they all use their own water bottles.

“I had to fill my bottle from the bathroom tap during most of my studies. It didn’t taste good. Then I discovered this wonderful machine at a different university, and I had to have it here as well. FILTERMAC was the logical option, and a really good one… Today, a lot of students enjoy this awesome water. And not only students, but also teachers, staff, and visitors. People bring their own bottles, kettles, glasses, and it just makes me smile. Thanks to FILTERMAC, we are doing something for the environment, making our surroundings better, and astonishing people who are yet to discover FILTERMAC. Thanks for everything you’re doing for us.” Ing. Jana Křečková, PhD student at ČZU PEF

So, what’s next?

We’ll keep the partnership with FILTERMAC. It makes sense, and fits in well with our other ECO activities. Like the Drive your bike to work initiative or the Green company project, where we have a collection box for small appliances, toners, compact fluorescent lamps, CDs, and DVDs here at eMan.
